Maximum dimensions by country in the EU: length, width and height
Operational guide · Directive 96/53/EC and megatrucks (EMS)
The EU reference limit
Directive 96/53/EC sets the maximum dimensions for international traffic. A vehicle complying with them cannot be refused in international traffic:
| Parameter | EU reference limit |
|---|---|
| Length — rigid truck | 12.00 m |
| Length — articulated vehicle | 16.50 m |
| Length — road train | 18.75 m |
| Width — general | 2.55 m |
| Width — refrigerated bodies | 2.60 m |
| Height | 4.00 m (de facto standard) |
Aerodynamic devices
Directive (EU) 2015/719 allows the maximum length to be exceeded with aerodynamic cabs and rear devices that improve efficiency, provided they do not increase the vehicle’s load capacity.
Longer combinations: the European Modular System (EMS)
The Directive lets each State authorise longer combinations (megatruck or EMS, up to 25.25 m) on its national network. Situation in the main jurisdictions:
| Country | Long combinations (EMS / megatruck) |
|---|---|
| Sweden (SE) | Up to 25.25 m — and up to 34.5 m under permit |
| Finland (FI) | Up to 25.25 m — and larger combinations under conditions |
| Netherlands (NL) | LZV up to 25.25 m and 60 t on approved routes |
| Germany (DE) | Lang-Lkw up to 25.25 m on authorised network |
| Spain (ES) | Megatruck up to 25.25 m and 60 t (since 2022) |
| Rest of the EU (general) | Standard limit 16.50 m / 18.75 m |
Height is not harmonised
The Directive does not set a single maximum height in the EU. 4.00 m is the de facto standard because infrastructure (bridges, tunnels) is designed to that clearance. Some countries set no statutory height limit, but the actual clearance of the route always governs.
No automatic cross-border right
A 25.25 m megatruck authorised in one country has no automatic right to cross the border into another that has not adopted the same rules. Without a specific authorisation, the operation may require transhipment at the border.
The figures above are reference values for operational purposes and do not constitute legal advice. Always verify the authorised dimensions and the actual clearance of the route in the applicable country.
